Storage in transit is part of household goods (HHG) transportation. This storage is cumulative and may accrue at any combination of origin, transit, and destination. HHG storage cannot begin before the date the HHG are released to a transportation service provider.
-
A member is authorized 90 days’ storage in transit for any authorized HHG transportation. If HHG are not removed from storage before expiration of the first 90-day period, storage charges accruing thereafter are the member’s responsibility unless additional storage is authorized/approved.
-
When, because of conditions beyond the member’s control, the HHG in storage in transit at Government expense cannot be withdrawn during the first 90 days, additional storage for not more than an additional 90 days may be authorized/approved by the Office of Commissioned Corps Operations. Among the reasons that additional storage may be authorized/approved are:
- Serious illness of the officer,
- Serious illness or death of a dependent,
- Directed TDY after arrival at PDS,
o Non-availability of suitable civilian housing,
- Awaiting completion of residence under construction, and
- Acts of god.
-
Officers requesting an additional storage should prepare a memo for authorization (See the following web link:
SAMPLE Memorandum: “Request for Extension of Temporary Storage of Household Goods”)
for authorization/approval of such additional storage. The memo must contain a statement(s) of all the facts, including the date HHG were placed into temporary storage, and the number of additional storage days requested (not more than an additional 90 days).
-
The officer must forward the completed memorandum through his/her HHS operating division or non-HHS organization budget director and Commissioned Corps Liaison for signature. After both signatures are obtained, please mail the request memorandum to:
