This article carefully detailed the research that went into developing a venous ulcer guideline to improve venous ulcer care. The research explored evidence based, best wound care practices for venous ulcer management and yielded the development of a venous ulcer algorithm to improve healthcare. It is a ‘benchmark’ for venous ulcer care resulting in improved quality of care and subsequent reimbursement.

This article detailed much of the gratifying work during the 175 surgeries the team participated in during their travels to Tatarstan, a republic of the Russian Federation in June 2005. The holistic approach included an additional week stay to ensure that all patients were recovering well. It also portrayed the global role that the team and the author (an operating room nurse – CAPT Angela Martinell) undertook to improve the quality of life and well-being of those who are less fortunate in other parts of the world.

This article describes the work force disparities which are becoming a significant issue in worldwide health. It details the inception of a nursing database which was an evidence-based, innovative approach to dealing with the healthcare work force shortage, particularly nursing , in a region of the world which is in real need of a robust healthcare and nursing workforce—Kenya.

CAPT Donna Olive is the recipient of the Hanzel Award for Administrative Activities for outstanding work at the Indian Health facilities and at the Federal Bureau of Prisons including the development of an infection control policy, the reduction of communicable disease risk among the Federal inmate population, and the implementation of strategies in the prevention and management of infectious diseases in the correctional setting. CAPT Donna Olive has implemented a model for other correctional healthcare systems.

LCDR Lois K. Schumacher, the recipient of the Petry Leone Award for Health Promotion and Education, demonstrated resourcefulness and dedication in helping to accomplish the mission of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service as well as professional and technical skills and competence in raising the quality of nursing. Her consistent and thorough work at the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation, which includes incorporating a variety of different program activities into the Diabetes Prevention/Lifestyle Change Program offered to the 32 surrounding villages, the Native Dance Program Funding, and the 4th and 5th Grade Walking Program, is acknowledged as impressive and responsive.
