2006 USPHS Professional Conference – May 1-4, 2006

The recent events in the Gulf Coast and concern about a potential influenza pandemic underscore the urgent need to foster cross-governmental leadership, creative thinking, and innovative approaches to address both the short-term and long-term public health challenges facing our Nation. The Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) has a critical role to play in leading this effort.

These important challenges will be the focus of the 2006 U.S. Public Health Service Professional Conference, which will be held May 1-4, 2006 in Denver. The conference is organized by the Commissioned Officers Association (COA) of the U.S. Public Health Service.

This 3½ day conference will include a panel featuring State and local health directors, with Dr. Kevin Stephens, the New Orleans Health Director, as well as sessions on a wide range of critical issues including future pandemics; food safety; the long-term threat of obesity; disaster response in the wake of Hurricane Katrina; and much more. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona will deliver the keynote address. Continuing education credits will be available for a broad array of professions and the conference will include a full day of profession-specific sessions.

This conference presents a unique opportunity to reach across agencies and levels of government, and strengthen public-private partnerships to advance solutions to these pressing problems. COA is encouraging broad participation from Corps officers and is asking for their help in informing their colleagues and professional partners about this conference, including both uniformed and civilian public health professionals.
