Meet the New Chief Professional Officer |

CAPT Janice Huy was selected as the Chief Professional Officer for the Dietitian category effective 1 June 2005. As Chief Dietitian
Officer, CAPT Huy is responsible for providing leadership and coordination of Public Health Service (PHS) dietitian professional affairs
for the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department of Health and Human Services. CAPT Huy will provide guidance and advice to the
Surgeon General and the Dietitian/Nutritionist Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) on matters such as recruitment, retention, and
career development of PHS dietitians and nutritionists. |

CAPT Huy received her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Dietetics from The Ohio State University in 1976. Her first professional
position was as a nutritionist in the Wedco District Health Department in Kentucky. In addition to her nutrition counseling
responsibilities, she directed the fluoride mouth rinse program for the elementary schools in her five-county district. She
received a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee and received a Master of Science
degree in nutrition with an emphasis on public health in 1979. CAPT Huy began her PHS Commissioned Corps career as a Public Health
Nutritionist with the Indian Health Service Fort Peck Service Unit in Montana, where she helped the Head Start and Senior Nutrition
Program plan quality meals for their constituents. |

In 1985, she began a 1-year NHSC Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Residency at the North Carolina Department of Public Health, where as
a result of her work, North Carolina received funding to support nutrition services for children with special health care needs. During
her tenure as MCH Nutrition Consultant for PHS Region X in Seattle, CAPT Huy led a team of state nutrition consultants in development
of the Region X Head Start Nutrition Guidelines. The guidelines were distributed to every Head Start agency in the region and were used
to identify and manage nutrition-related health problems. |

In 1988, CAPT Huy joined the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), where she has held several senior leadership positions and is currently Deputy Director of the NIOSH Office of Research and
Technology Transfer. In this capacity, she establishes partnerships with private organizations and government agencies to translate
research findings into practice, target dissemination efforts, and evaluate the effectiveness of these efforts in improving worker
safety and health. |

CAPT Huy is a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Commissioned Officers Association (COA). She served as National
President of COA and on the National COA Board of Directors. She has shown notable leadership in PHS Commissioned Corps activities
as a past member of the Dietitian/Nutritionist PAC and a current member of the PHS Uniform Board. She is also an apprentice instructor
in the Commissioned Officers Training Academy. As Chair of the NIOSH Commissioned Corps Committee, CAPT Huy advises NIOSH senior
leadership on issues related to commissioned officers and mentors junior officers. She heads the NIOSH Commissioned Officer Awards
Board and is a member of the CDC Commissioned Officer Awards Board. |

CAPT Huy has been a Regular Corps officer since 1990 and has received numerous awards, including three PHS Commendation Medals, three PHS
Achievement Medals, two PHS Citations, and six PHS Unit Commendations. |
