USPHS Engineer Named 2006 NSPE Federal Engineer of the Year

CDR John Cardarelli II, USPHS, was named the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) ‘2006 Federal Engineer of the Year’
on February 23, during National Engineers Week at the National Press Club. CDR Cardarelli was one of 10 finalists from among 24
Federal agencies competing for the award. |

Four other Corps Engineer officers also received recognition for their outstanding engineering accomplishments at the same awards
ceremony. They are: CDR Stephen P. Rhodes, Food and Drug Administration; CAPT Michael G. Gressel, Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention; CAPT Robert J. Reiss, National Park Service; and CDR Christopher P. Brady, Indian Health Service. |

CDR Cardarelli is assigned to the National Decontamination Team in the Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati. He is a
nationally-recognized radiological expert. He serves as a subject matter expert in the fields of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation,
decontamination, and risk analysis as it relates to environmental emergencies. CDR Cardarelli plans, develops, and implements major
aspects of a national program for developing decontamination methods and techniques related to radiological releases and terrorism
events with a particular focus on health effects, toxicology, risk assessment, and mitigation. |

CDR Cardarelli received a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, an M.S. in Health Physics, and a Ph.D. in Industrial Hygiene at the University
of Cincinnati. He is board certified as a Professional Engineer (nuclear specialty), an Industrial Hygienist, and as a Health
Physicist. |
