Announcement: One-year Open Enrollment Period for Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) -- 1 October 2005 through 30 September 2006

A one-year open season to make certain elections for SBP begins October 1, 2005 and ends September 30, 2006 for the following individuals:

  1. Members currently entitled to retired pay, but not a participant in SBP, may elect SBP.
  2. Members currently participants in SBP but not at the maximum base amount, or, providing coverage for a dependent child but not for a spouse or former spouse, may elect to increase the base amount or provide coverage for a spouse or former spouse at a base amount not less than the base amount provided for the dependent child.

The effective date for above elections is the first day of the first calendar month following the month in which the election is received by the Compensation Branch.

If the member dies before the end of a 2-year period following the effective date of the election, the election is void, and the reduction that was made in retired pay for the premiums will be paid to the beneficiary under the voided election.

The premiums to be charged will be: (1) a monthly premium for the coverage, beginning with the effective date of the election; and (2) the total amount the retired pay would have been reduced before the effective date of the election if the person had chosen to participate in the SBP for the same base amount at the first opportunity that was afforded the member, plus interest on the amount.

Retirees wishing to enroll or obtain additional information including premium costs may contact the Office of Commissioned Corps Support Services, Compensation Branch, at 1-800-638-8744 or 301-594-2963.
