PHS Instrumental Ensemble and the Commissioned Officers Association’s 40th Annual Public Health Professional Conference

PHS Instrumental Ensemble
RADM Kenneth Moritsugu leads the PHS Ensemble in an afternoon practice session in preparation for the evening’s "PHS Musical Celebration"

All sights were set for the Commissioned Officers Association’s (COA) 40th Annual Public Health Professional Conference at the Wyndham Franklin Plaza Hotel in Philadelphia, PA, 6-9 June, 2005. Quietly behind the scenes, officers of the Public Health Service (PHS) Instrumental Ensemble had been practicing, readying their instruments for the annual get-together. This year’s gathering was remarkable with 11 field and 10 Rockville-based officers, some playing together for the first time.

Rehearsals began Sunday evening under the direction of CDR Elise Young. For these musicians, playing at the annual meeting was a culmination of a year’s preparation. Conference attendees were treated to the talents of their fellow officers during the ‘Opening Ceremonies’ then later that afternoon by the chamber ensemble and saxophone quintet providing the music for the ‘Meet and Greet.’

Monday evening’s main event was the “PHS Musical Celebration” at 2000 hours featuring the various PHS music ensembles. In attendance were VADM Richard H. Carmona and other dignitaries as well as family and friends. Leading off the evening was the instrumental ensemble performance of Caduceus and Anchor Fanfare, Theme from Jurassic Park, Rondeau, Spring, Hymn to the Fallen, and The Patriot, followed by the Atlanta Choral Ensemble and the PHS Chamber (strings) Ensemble. The combined Choral groups from Washington, D.C. and Butner, NC, did a stirring rendition of the Festival of Freedom with CAPT John Bartko, USPHS (Ret.), serving as narrator and RADM Kenneth Moritsugu conducting.

The evening’s program concluded with the entire PHS Ensemble, under the direction of RADM Moritsugu, joining together in a performance of God Bless America and the Public Health Service March and included an audience sing-along.

Preparations are underway for next year’s COA’s annual meeting to be held 30 April-4 May 2006, in Denver, CO.
