Psychologist of the Year Award – Call for Nominations

Active-duty Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) officer psychologists are eligible to apply or be nominated for the ‘Psychologist of the Year Award.’ One awardee is chosen each year. The Chair, Chair-Elect, and Secretary of the Psychologist Professional Advisory Group (PSYPAG) are not eligible to compete.
 
Nominations may be made by civil service employees or Corps officers who are familiar with the nominated officer's accomplishments. For this award, psychologists are described as those in the Health Services Officer category or Scientist category who are classified by the Corps as psychologists and who have advanced graduate degrees in psychology and/or a State licensure/certification as a psychologist.
 
Candidates must demonstrate:
  1. A positive Corps professional image and superior officership,
  2. Notable leadership, and
  3. Must meet one of the following criteria:
    1. A specific notable accomplishment that impacts the public health or the science or practice of psychology;
    2. Sustained high quality work performance demonstrated by significant accomplishments over a significant period of time in an important public health field, and initiative in leadership;
    3. The application of a unique skill or creative imagination to the approach or solution of a significant public health problem(s); or
    4. Technical, scientific, and/or other professional contributions significant to a specific Office, Center, Bureau, Operating Division, Staff Division, or the Public Health Service mission.
A complete submission package consists of the following:
  1. Identification of the candidate including rank and PHS serial number.
  2. Candidate’s information including title, work address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address.
  3. Nominator information (if applicable) including name, position title, address, and phone number.
  4. Nomination information (no more than two pages):
    1. The first paragraph should state the reason for the nomination and mention the areas of practice.
    2. The body of the submission must describe how the candidate demonstrates the three criteria mentioned above and how the candidate has brought about substantial professional impact/results.
    3. 12 point font should be used, with 1 inch margins all around.
    4. Do not send additional enclosure(s).
The Awards Sub-Committee of the PSYPAG is composed of one or more representatives from the following: Current PSYPAG Officers (Chair, Chair-Elect, and Secretary); past PSYPAG Chairs; PSYPAG Awards Sub-Committee Representative, and past recipients of the PSYPAG Award. The first award will be decided by the past 2005 PSYPAG Chair and Secretary, 2006 Chair and Secretary, and PSYPAG Awards Sub-Committee Representative.
 
The Awards Sub-Committee will rank the most meritorious nominations and select the awardee. The selection of the recipient for the ‘Psychologist of the Year Award’ by the Awards Sub-Committee is final. The awardee may accept his or her award at the Commissioned Officers Association (COA) Public Health Professional Conference. All costs associated with attending the COA Professional Conference are the responsibility of the awarded officer.
 
The complete hard copy nomination package must be received by mail on or before 15 April 2006. Thereafter, all completed application packages must be received by 15 January of each succeeding year. On the envelope please notate: PSYPAG.
