Advice to Corps Officers for the New Year . . . from the Surgeon General
|
With the Secretary’s decisions on Transformation of the Commissioned Corps, there are many activities and
actions in store for the new year. As we come to the close of the calendar year, I would like to take this
opportunity to write about some important end-of-the-year issues. You are the best person to ensure that you
are meeting the requirements as an officer, and no one should care more about your career than you do. As we
close out the end of our calendar year, there are several items you should consider, whether you are up for
promotion or just refreshing your career plan: |
|
- Check your Office of Force Readiness and Deployment (OFRD) Officer Summary Page to ensure you are
Basic qualified and will remain so. Ensure all immunizations are properly entered as well as each one in
sequence. Ensure your PPD, Influenza, APFT/President’s Challenge, and BLS are not going to expire soon,
and update your personal information. I find it helpful to set a reminder on my Outlook calendar to make
sure I remember to renew my requirements. Send your immunization documentation and APFT (form PHS-7044,
“Physical Readiness Standards Report”) to the Medical Affairs Branch at the address below. It is also a
good idea to fax in the front and back of your BLS card, which will be placed in the Continuing Education
section of your electronic Official Personnel Folder (eOPF).
- Review your category’s benchmarks. Each category defines officer promotion benchmarks. When reviewing
those benchmarks, determine which ones you have achieved and create a goal and plan to reach the other
benchmarks prior to your next promotion. Although benchmarks change and evolve overtime, attaining those
in place now will always make you a better officer.
- Review your medical information by logging into your eOPF. Ensure your DD Form 2808, “Report of
Medical Examination,” has been completed within the last 5 years and your DD Form 2807-1, “Report of
Medical History,” has been completed within the last 12 months. Ensure that these will still be up-to-date
through the end of the year.
- While logged into your eOPF, ensure that your license, if applicable, is current and valid.
- Check your Security/Sensitivity Clearance Papers (‘Pink Section’) to ensure your National Agency
Check Inquiry (NACI) or a security clearance is on file. If you have never had a security clearance
(at a minimum a NACI) or it is not reflected in your eOPF, contact your Commissioned Corps Liaison to
complete the requirements.
- Also check that your 2005 Commissioned Officers’ Effectiveness Report is on file. If it is not, then
follow-up with your chain of command, rater, reviewing official, and Commissioned Corps Liaison.
- Prior to the end of December, fax a current version of your curriculum vitae, continuing education
credits, and letters into your eOPF. It is best to send all documents to your eOPF sooner rather then
later as the fax line is often busy.
