Good morning -

On October 5, 2006, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Action for Healthy Kids will host Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge on the National Mall (between 4th and 7th) from 10am – 1:00pm.  We cordially invite you to participate in this event to show support for more than 250 students from DC-area schools as they take on Game On!

We are requesting your assistance in three specific ways:

·        Be a youth supporter.  We are recruiting one adult for every student participant, so each student is “cheered on” or even joined in the Course activities.

·        Volunteer staff.  We still need volunteers to guide the students through the course, assist with lunch distribution for the students, and assist with other activities.

·        Network and share information.  This event will feature a unique networking opportunity with other leaders in education and health and provide materials on your programs and/or organizations.

Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge, now in its pilot year, is the product of a strong public-private partnership and aims to offer schools and communities across the nation with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to celebrate going back-to-school with a commitment to moving more and eating better.  It includes a challenge course that teaches healthy habits of nutritious eating and encourages physical activity for students, their families, teachers, and community leaders.  Much different from a “race”, Game On! is fun-for-all and non-competitive.

More than 500 communities and schools across America will host Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge between August 1st and October 1st.  On October 5th, Game On! will focus national attention on the integral role Local Wellness Policies can play to ensure that American youth are eating better, getting daily physical activity, and therefore, are better equipped to focus in the classroom.

Please see the attached flyer to learn more about the event. Your support and presence at Game On! are crucial to its success.  RSVP to attend the event or to serve as a volunteer by sending an email to Rebecca Clark at Rebecca@actionforhealthykids.org by September 22, 2006, so we can be sure that the student participants have supporters.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at meredith.terpeluk@hhs.gov.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on October 5th!
