CAPT Sven E. Rodenbeck
Meet the New Chief Professional Officer for the Engineer Category
CAPT Sven E. Rodenbeck was selected as the Chief Professional Officer for the Engineer category effective 1 November 2009, and on that date he will also be promoted to the rank of RADM (Lower Half). As Chief Engineer Officer, he is responsible for providing leadership and coordination of Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) engineer professional affairs for the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department of Health and Human Services. CAPT Rodenbeck will provide guidance and advice to the Surgeon General and the Engineer Professional Advisory Committee (EPAC) on matters such as recruitment, retention, and career development of Corps engineers.

CAPT Rodenbeck received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Central Florida (1978), a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland (1983), and a Doctor of Science degree in Environmental Health from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (1997). CAPT Rodenbeck is a registered professional engineer in the states of Florida and Maryland and is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer.

CAPT Rodenbeck obtained his Reserve Corps commission in 1979 and was assimilated into the Regular Corps in 1989. He served initially with the Indian Health Service on the Rocky Boy Reservation, Montana, as a Field Engineer. In 1981, he transferred to the Environmental Protection Branch, Division of Safety, National Institutes of Health, where he served as an Environmental Engineer and Environmental Compliance Officer in Bethesda, Maryland. Since 1987, CAPT Rodenbeck has been stationed with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Division of Health Assessment and Consultation in Atlanta, Georgia. At ATSDR he has been responsible for various technical and managerial activities related to evaluating the public health impacts of hazardous waste sites. In addition, he was the Team Leader for ATSDR’s response to the World Trade Center attack and technical lead for the ATSDR Hurricane Katrina response. Currently he is the Deputy Branch Chief for the ATSDR Cooperative Agreement Program Evaluation Branch. From May 2006 through May 2009, CAPT Rodenbeck was also the Commander of the Public Health Service (PHS) Applied Public Health Team 3.

CAPT Rodenbeck has received many PHS awards for outstanding service including two Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medals, an Outstanding Service Medal, and three Commendation Medals. He has also received numerous unit and service awards including seven Outstanding Unit Citations. Various professional associations have also recognized CAPT Rodenbeck’s achievements, including the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS) -- Gorgas Medal; the Commissioned Officers Association of the U.S. Public Health Service (COA) -- John C. Villforth Leadership Award and the PHS Responder of the Year for 2005; the National Society of Professional Engineers -- PHS Engineer of the Year for 1997; and the Society of American Military Engineers’ (SAME) -- Hollis Medal.

CAPT Rodenbeck has authored or coauthored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. His membership in professional organizations include the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE), American Society of Civil Engineers, AMSUS, COA, SAME, and Water Environment Federation. CAPT Rodenbeck has been an AAEE Trustee (1999-2002) and a SAME National Director (2001-2007).
