CAPT Karen Lohmann Siegel
Meet the New Chief Professional Officer for the Therapist Category
CAPT Karen Lohmann Siegel has been selected as the Chief Professional Officer for the Therapist category effective 13 February 2007. As Chief Therapist Officer, CAPT Siegel is responsible for providing leadership and coordination of therapy professional affairs of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) for the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department. CAPT Siegel will provide guidance and advice to the Surgeon General and the Therapist Professional Advisory Committee (TPAC) on matters such as recruitment, retention, and career development of Corps audiologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists.
CAPT Siegel graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in Physical Therapy in 1984 from Washington University in St. Louis. She began her Corps career in 1985 as a clinical staff therapist in the Physical Therapy Section of the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 1987 she transferred to the Biomechanics Laboratory at NIH, and in 1993 completed a master’s degree in Biomechanics at the University of Maryland in College Park.
Currently, CAPT Siegel is a Senior Staff Specialist in the Physical Disabilities Branch, a collaboration between the NIH Clinical Center and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. In this capacity, she manages a clinical movement analysis laboratory and utilizes the technology in support of numerous clinical research protocols and in clinical evaluations of gait to enhance the diagnosis and rehabilitation of movement disorders. She has published over 85 manuscripts and abstracts and presented at 50 national and international conferences speaking about movement adaptations to minimize the impact of physical impairments on locomotor disability.
CAPT Siegel is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) including the Orthopaedic and Federal Physical Therapy sections, the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society, and the Commissioned Officers Association. She contributes expertise on research design and serves as a subject matter expert on gait, biomechanics, and motion capture techniques for numerous biomedical journals and has served on a research study section for the Department of Veterans Affairs. She is a past member and executive secretary of the TPAC, served on numerous TPAC committees and task forces, and has designed and maintained the category Web site since its inception.
CAPT Siegel has been a Regular Corps officer since 1990, and Corps recognition has included three Public Health Service (PHS) Commendation Medals, a PHS Achievement Medal, a PHS Citation, and a Crisis Response Service Award. She has been a three time recipient of the Josef Hoog award, the Therapist category award for excellence in research. Other professional recognition includes the Jack Walker award from the APTA for the best article published on clinical practice in the journal Physical Therapy, and an outstanding alumni award from Washington University.
