The Basic and Applied Sciences Professional Advisory Group (BASPAG) is soliciting nominations for the first “Basic and Applied Sciences Officer of the Year Award.” This award was developed to acknowledge an officer of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) who is a member of the Health Services category, with a concentration in scientific disciplines such as the biological sciences, epidemiology, health sciences, mathematical sciences, and physical sciences. The nominee should have made a significant contribution to the advancement of the Nation's health, demonstrated leadership in his/her work and the Corps, and showed involvement in health-related professional or community organizations or activities. The person selected for this distinguished award will be announced at the USPHS Scientific and Training Symposium to be held May 24-27 in San Diego, California. The award will be presented annually at the USPHS Scientific and Training Symposium.
Complete nomination information and forms are available on the BASPAG Web site and must be submitted no later than Wednesday, 14 April 2010. Incomplete award nominations will not be considered. Nominations may come from a supervisor, professional colleague, or anyone who, through a professional working relationship, can attest to the impact of the nominee's contributions to the advancement of public health. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
Nominations must include:
- Nomination cover sheet/form (the cover sheet can be found on the BASPAG Web site:

- Narrative, not to exceed two pages (font size 10 or 12), that describes:
a. The nominee's contributions to the advancement of the Nation's health. Nominations should address the impact of the work and the role of the nominee;
b. The leadership of the nominee in the work being cited as both an employee and a Corps officer (e.g., providing vision or direction; developing an innovative approach; initiating significant activities; pursuing ongoing professional development; mentoring; etc.); and
c. Involvement of the nominee in health-related professional or community organizations or activities.
- Current curriculum vitae (CV) and CV summary sheet (per Health Services category guidelines).
