I am pleased to announce that the Office of the Secretary (OS) will be participating in the second year of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Career Mentoring Program which is part of the Department's Human Capital Strategy. The first year of the program, currently in its third quarter has had challenges as in any new program, but it has been a great success with over 200 participants receiving valuable mentoring support. Last year's class was limited in membership as a pilot program. This year's program will be open to all HHS employees regardless of grade who have completed at least one year of Federal service. |
How does it work? The OS/HHS Career Mentoring Program is designed to encourage career growth in a rapidly changing work environment by providing a formal method to establish one-on-one relationships. It's an ongoing effort to meet the changing recruitment and retention needs of HHS and is unique in that it allows for cross-Departmental mentoring. Part of this commitment involves providing employees with the tools, training, and support systems they need to develop their full potential. |
What is a mentoring relationship? The OS/HHS Career Mentoring Program will allow mentees to identify and solicit mentors who are experienced, trusted, and knowledgeable individuals. These mentors will help less experienced employees to make the most of opportunities as they become available and to identify career strategies. Mentors will be given the opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise as their mentees plan and realize career goals, acquire a better understanding of the HHS mission, and develop their potential for a rewarding career within HHS and the Federal Government. |
For mentees - The program will target GS employees at the GS-5 level and above and all members of the Commission Corps on extended active duty, providing they have worked in the agency for a least 1 year. Mentees who are GS-5 through GS-9 should select mentors who are grades 11 and above. |
For mentees who are GS-11 and above, you may either choose a higher grade mentor or you may want to consider choosing a person at your own grade level which would create a peer-to-peer type of mentoring. |
Specifically, mentees must:

For mentors - The program allows mentees to identify and solicit mentors who are experienced and knowledgeable individuals. Mentors should be in grades GS-11 and above and the comparable Commissioned Corps level. |

|
What does participation in the program involve? Mentors and mentees should meet twice a month (mentees are actively involved in selecting mentors to work with). Together they establish a career development plan for the mentee that will help the mentee meet his/her goals and objectives through useful work experiences, personal contacts, and exposure to a variety of agency activities. Finally, participation in the program will allow mentees to gain broader perspectives about government in general and more specifically HHS values, programs, and mission. |
What is required and how can I sign up? You must obtain your supervisor's approval to be a mentee or a mentor. Please complete the supervisor agreement form, mentor/mentee agreement, and a career development plan by May 26, 2005 if you are interested in participating. Forms may be submitted to Antonette Fleming, Office of the Secretary Executive Office, HHH Building, Room 749D, 200 Independence Avenue, SW., Washington, DC 20201. |
