Servicemembers Civil Relief Act |
|
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act of 2003 (SCRA), formerly known as the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act of 1940 (SSCRA), is a Federal law that provides protections for uniformed services members as they enter active duty. It covers issues such as rental agreements, security deposits, prepaid rent, eviction, installment contracts, credit card interest rates, mortgage interest rates, mortgage foreclosure, civil judicial proceedings, automobile leases, life insurance, health insurance, and income tax payments.
Officers of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) who require assistance with a SCRA issue may contact their nearest Armed Forces Legal Assistance Program / Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps of any of the military services. Please note: Corps officers are not guaranteed JAG assistance since availability of assistance is based on the mission requirements of the Services’ JAG Corps.
Please consult the military legal assistance office locator for each branch of the armed forces. For information about the SCRA, please visit the following Web sites:
