CAPT Derek E. Dunn, USPHS (1945–2002), a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research scientist and administrator, and an officer in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps), was respected for his professionalism, leadership, and integrity. In his honor, on 5 December 2008, the Washington office of NIOSH dedicated a conference room in his memory.
NIOSH’s Washington office was honored to host CAPT Dunn's family and his Corps colleagues. RADM Boris Lushniak and Acting Deputy Surgeon General RADM Robert Williams were in attendance, and RADM Williams spoke warmly of CAPT Dunn’s humanity and dedication to excellent science in the service of worker health and safety.
A plaque honoring CAPT Dunn is inscribed with a question he often posed: "What have you done for the worker today?"
