Call for Nominations for EHOPAC’s 2009 Annual Thomas E. Crow Mentor Award

The purpose of the Thomas E. Crow Mentor Award is to recognize significant contributions by an individual who has enhanced the professional growth and career development of environmental health professionals working in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) by serving in a mentoring capacity. The award was established to recognize the accomplishments of environmental health professionals who serve in an exemplary mentoring role to a less tenured officer(s). To be eligible for this award the nominee must have served in an official capacity as a mentor in the EHOPAC Mentoring & Orientation program within the past 3 years. Active duty Corps officers in the Environmental Health Officer category (O-4 and above) and Department of Health and Human Services civil service personnel (GS-12 and above) who practice environmental health, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, or radiological health are eligible for this award.

Candidates may be nominated by supervisors, colleagues, officers, protégés (junior environmental health officers), or program managers. The nomination should consist of a narrative not to exceed one page. The narrative should highlight the nominee’s successful mentoring role(s). Examples of additional mentoring activities may include serving as a preceptor in the Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program, serving as an advisor to a graduate or fellowship student, or officially mentoring an environmental health professional by supporting his/her professional growth. All nominations must be accompanied by the nomination form which will serve as the nomination cover sheet. The completed nomination form and narrative must be submitted to the Chairperson of the EHOPAC Awards Subcommittee by 1 April 2009. Call for Nominations for EHOPAC’s 2009 Annual John C. Eason Award

The purpose of the John C. Eason Award is to recognize excellence by individuals in achieving the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) mission of improving the Nation’s health through the practice of environmental health. The award was established to recognize the accomplishments of talented newcomers to the field of environmental health and moreover, to recognize the promise these individuals hold for the future of the Corps. The criteria will focus on the following two themes: A. One or more notable and commendable contributions toward the advancement of environmental health to the benefit of a localized or broad population; and B. Evidence of exemplary performance indicating that the nominee will continue to serve the Corps with excellence, honor and distinction. Eligibility is limited to active duty Corps officers in the Environmental Health Officer category at the O-3 level and below and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) civil service personnel at the GS-11 level and below who have served 5 years or less with any HHS Operating Division or Staff Division, and including Corps officers detailed to non-HHS organizations (e.g., Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency, National Park Service).

Candidates may be nominated by supervisors, colleagues, or program managers. The nominee must be engaged in the practice of environmental health, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, or radiological health. The rank/grade of the nominee is determined at the time the nomination is submitted. Individuals subsequently promoted will not be precluded from eligibility. All nominations must be accompanied by the nomination form which will serve as the nomination cover sheet. The completed nomination form and narrative must be submitted to the Chairperson of the EHOPAC Awards Subcommittee by 1 April 2009. Call for Nominations for EHOPAC’s 2009 Edward (Ted) Moran Award

The purpose of the Edward (Ted) Moran Award is to recognize significant contributions by individuals in achieving the Commissioned Corps U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) mission of improving the Nation’s health through the practice of environmental health. Each nominee must have made an outstanding contribution in the field of environmental health thereby advancing the mission of the Corps. The nominee must have been directly involved as a principal participant in the exemplary work. This contribution should include at least one of the following accomplishments: A. Achievement of at least one significant environmental health accomplishment characterized by initiative, innovation, or imagination; B. The development of, or a major improvement in, a procedure, policy or regulation which increased efficiency, reduced cost, saved time or otherwise contributed notably to the accomplishment of an important environmental health objective; and C. Superior performance in the accomplishment of assigned duties over a defined period of time which resulted in work which exceeded expected measurable objectives.

Candidates may be nominated by supervisors, colleagues, or program managers. Active duty Corps officers in the Environmental Health Officer category at the O-4/O-5 level and Department of Health of Human Services civil service personnel at the GS-12 or GS-13 level who are engaged in the practice of environmental health, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, or radiological health are eligible for this award. The rank/grade of the nominee is determined at the time the nomination is submitted. Individuals promoted subsequent to the awards submission deadline will not be precluded from eligibility. All nominations must be accompanied by the nomination form which will serve as the nomination cover sheet. The completed nomination form and narrative must be submitted to the Chairperson of the EHOPAC Awards Subcommittee by 1 April 2009. Call for Nominations for EHOPAC’s 2009 John G. Todd Award

The purpose of the John G. Todd Award is to recognize significant career contributions by individuals in achieving the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) mission of improving the Nation’s health through the practice of environmental health. This award is bestowed upon an individual with a genuine sense of public service whose career is notable for accomplishments in the technical or professional fields of environmental health. Such achievements should include one or more of the following contributions: A. Management and leadership of a major environmental health program component of the Corps; B. A highly significant achievement in environmental health research or program direction, administration, or implementation; and C. Superior series of significant environmental health contributions that have resulted in a major impact on public health.

Candidates may be nominated by supervisors, colleagues, or program managers. Active duty Corps officers in the Environmental Health Officer category at the O-6 level and above and Department of Health and Human Services civil service personnel at the GS-14 level and above who are primarily engaged in the practice of environmental health, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, or radiological health and who have at least 15 years of work experience in these professional fields are eligible for this award. All nominations must be accompanied by the nomination form which will serve as the nomination cover sheet. The completed nomination form and narrative must be submitted to the Chairperson of the EHOPAC Awards Subcommittee by 1 April 2009. Presentation of Awards

The EHOPAC Awards Subcommittee will review all nominations and select the award recipients. The Crow Award, Eason Award, Moran Award, and Todd Award will all be presented at the National Environmental Health Association’s Annual Educational Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, to be held 21-24 June 2009.
