Important Information Regarding the Officer Basic Course

The Division of Commissioned Corps Training and Career Development (DCCTCD) in the Office of Commissioned Corps Operations, has been making some exciting changes to the Officer Basic Course (OBC). Working in concert with our colleagues in the Office of Force Readiness and Deployment (OFRD), we just wrapped up the 28th OBC class and have started identifying the classes by their actual course number instead of by the fiscal year number. The 29th OBC will be held in a new venue this month. We are in the process of obtaining a long term contract, but in the interim we will be holding OBC at the Holiday Inn in Gaithersburg, MD.

Some additional changes include the addition of daily homework to include public health projects and extra presentations provided by the students, creating an interactive and dynamic learning environment. We have added additional and leadership exercises to expand the opportunity for students to both lead and follow given different scenarios. The course structure and final exam has changed from less content focus to more resource identification. Because processes change on a regular basis, our primary goal is to teach officers where to go to get the most recent and accurate information, while still providing guidance regarding the current processes.

To motivate the students and add a new dimension to the course, we are now identifying a Distinguished Graduate and Honor Squad during the graduation ceremony. Through our new pre and post survey we can see that the OBC experience has added both knowledge and confidence of how to navigate officers’ careers in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. However, the true value from the course is seen through the transformation of the students who have attended.

As always, please feel free to join us at the next OBC graduation.

Graduates of Officer Basic Course 28
The Commissioned Officer Training Academy, in association with the Office of Force Readiness and Deployment, wishes to extend congratulations to graduates of the Officer Basic Course (OBC) 28.

OBC training is a 2-week course of study for new calls to active duty to the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps). Officers learn about the history of the Corps and establish a foundation of knowledge in preparation for their Corps careers.
