Nursing Professional Advisory Committee Presents Awards
 
The Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) Nursing Professional Advisory Committee (N-PAC) would like to acknowledge the recipients of the 2009 Publication Awards and the Minnigerode Awards for Nursing Excellence (MANE) recipients who were recognized at the Nursing Recognition Day N-PAC ceremony held on 01 May 2009. Each recipient has demonstrated resourcefulness and dedication in helping to accomplish the missions of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Corps and adds immense value to the art and science of nursing. These awards collectively recognize nurses whose professional and technical skills and competence continue to raise the quality of nursing. Please help us honor these outstanding nurses!

The three N-PAC publication awards are awarded annually to HHS Corps officers, HHS Civil Service employees, or Tribal Direct Hire nurses who author a publication either published in the past 2 years or recently accepted for publication.
  • The RADM Faye G. Abdellah Award recognizes nurses whose body of work stimulates the development of nursing knowledge and practice through scientific investigation and research. The 2009 award was presented to Ms. Jane Fall-Dickson, RN, PhD of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, for her publication, "Stomatitis-related pain in women with breast cancer undergoing autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant,” Cancer Nurs. 2008 Nov-Dec;31(6): 452-61.

  • The RADM Julia R. Plotnick Publication Award for Health/Nursing Policy recognizes nurses authoring publications that inform and educate consumers and/or health care practitioners about significant health-related issues. The 2009 award was presented to CAPT Amy S. Collins, RN, MPH of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, for her publication, "Patient safety and quality: An evidence-based handbook for nurses,” (Prepared with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation) Chapter 41 – Preventing Health Care-Associated Infections. AHRQ Publication No. 08-0043. Rockville, MD.

  • The RADM O. Marie Henry Publication Award for Clinical Nursing Practice recognizes nurses authoring publications that describe clinical nursing practice. The 2009 award was presented to Ms. Katherine Feigenbaum, RN, MSN of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, for her publication, “Update on Gastroparesis,” Gastroenterology Nursing Journal, 29(3): 239-244.
The MANE awards are awarded annually to HHS nurses who demonstrate outstanding nursing contributions with measurable benefits through innovation and creativity.
  • The Gregg Group Award for Teamwork recognizes exemplary leadership contributions by nursing teams that result in noteworthy accomplishments and positive outcomes towards the attainment of HHS and Corps goals. The 2009 award was presented to the Division of Immigration Health Services (DIHS) under the leadership of CAPT Jacinto Garrido, DIHS, in Miami FL. CAPT Garrido’s team provided specialized medical support during Department of Homeland Security domestic and international missions under austere conditions. Members include: CDR Frank Molina; LCDR Angel Rivas Rivera; LCDR Jessica Diaz; LCDR Jeff Wiersma; LCDR Marc E. Clough; LCDR Steve Morin; LCDR Charles Huddleston; and LT Carroll Wyble.

  • The Hanzel Award for Administrative Activities recognizes exemplary leadership as a nurse executive that results in noteworthy accomplishments. One award was presented to CAPT Mary Rossi-Coajou, RN, MSN of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in Baltimore, MD, for the development, publication and program management of Medicare Hospice Conditions. A second recipient was Ms.Ursula Knoki-Wilson, RN, MSN, CNM, of the Indian Health Service (IHS), Chinle Service Unit in Chinle, AZ, for significant contributions to promote and provide culturally appropriate care for American Indian/Alaska Native citizens during her 20-year tenure with IHS.

  • The McLaughlin Award for Clinical Services recognizes exemplary leadership and skill resulting in noteworthy accomplishments as a clinician in direct patient care whose practice focuses on the timely and ethical delivery of health care. The 2009 award was presented to Ms. Barbara Green, RN, ARNP, of the Indian Health Service, Hastings Indian Medical Center in Tahlequah, OK, for her role as a leader and mentor for the nursing profession. Ms. Green has demonstrated excellence in performance beyond the scope of her present duty and her efforts have improved the health outcome of the population she serves.

  • The Petry Leone Award for Health Promotion and Education recognizes exemplary leadership as a nurse educator resulting in noteworthy accomplishments in patient/client or professional education, which informs and educates consumers and/or health care practitioners about significant health-related issues and promotes healthy lifestyles. The 2009 award was presented to CDR Wayne Keene, RN, BSN of the Indian Health Service (IHS), Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, NM, for his leadership in highlighting Safe Patient Handling and Movement (SPHM) within the IHS. In September 2008, his article, “Safe Patient Handling and Movement,” was published as the lead article in the IHS Primary Care Provider, a peer-reviewed journal that is distributed to more than 6,000 providers in the IHS.
