Physicians PAC Membership Deadline Date Extended to 7 September 2007

The Physicians Professional Advisory Committee (PPAC) is seeking motivated officers of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) and civil service physicians of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) who are interested in serving as members on this advisory panel. PPAC membership is open to all physicians who are employed in HHS’ Operating Divisions/Staff Divisions (OPDIVs/STAFFDIVs) as well as Corps officers in the Medical category detailed to non-HHS organizations.

The mission of the PPAC is to provide advice and consultation to the Surgeon General on issues relating to the professional practice and the personnel activities of the Medical category. Additionally, the PPAC seeks to represent a cross section of the activities and interests of all HHS physicians. The PPAC currently meets every other month (travel is not required for membership, and conference calling capability is available for all meetings). Regular attendance at meetings is required and PPAC members are expected to actively participate in the activities of at least one subcommittee during the term of service which is currently 3 years.

At least ten (10) full-voting membership positions will be available as of 1 January 2008. The PPAC will recommend successful candidates to the Surgeon General for a 3-year appointment, with the concurrence of the line supervisors and OPDIV/STAFFDIV representatives. Corps officers or HHS civil service physicians who are interested are encouraged to self-nominate. Individuals should submit a curriculum vitae along with a one-page cover letter describing their interest. This should be accompanied by a letter from the candidate’s supervisor concurring with the nomination. In addition, two (2) new non-voting membership categories have been added for the 2007 membership cycle. First, Ex-officio members may be appointed by the PPAC Chair following completion of a single 3-year term as full-voting members in good standing when they wish to remain active on the PPAC for an additional 3-year term as a non-voting member. Second, Affiliate members may be appointed by the PPAC Chair for a 1-year term. Candidates for Affiliate membership must demonstrate motivation to serve on the PPAC by prior PPAC service as a non-voting participant for at least 1 year on the PPAC and its subcommittees.

Candidates interested in Ex-officio or Affiliate membership should submit an updated curriculum vitae and written request for consideration for appointment. This request should detail how the candidate meets the criteria noted herein. These documents should also be sent as a Word attachment to an e-mail message by 7 September 2007 to the PPAC Membership Subcommittee Chair.
