January 4, 2011 Dear Fellow Officers, Today, January 4th, marks 122 years since the 50th Congress passed “An act to regulate appointments in the Marine Hospital Service of the U.S.” This act provided that ‘medical officers of the Marine Hospital Service of the United States shall hereafter be appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate….” With the passage of this Act, the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (Corps) was created allowing the members to be a mobile Corps subjected to duty anywhere upon assignment. Over the years, the Corps has transformed into a multifaceted professional public health force which has become our greatest asset. Throughout our continued advancements our mission continues to expand into the many facets of public health, research, and clinical care. One aspect of our Corps which remains steadfast is that of Service! On this anniversary date, let us all be reminded of our duty and let us rededicate ourselves to that service of protecting, promoting, and advancing the health and safety of our Nation. Happy Birthday Corps! |
