Update on Transition to Fall and Winter Uniforms
The transition to the fall and winter uniforms is quickly approaching. As a general rule, Summer Whites are not to be worn after the second Monday in October. Specific guidance from the Surgeon General will be posted as soon as received. Please monitor the Commissioned Corps Issuance System (CCMIS) for posting and effective dates. http://dcp.psc.gov/eccis

Update on UAC
The 2010 Uniform Advisory Committee (UAC) members have been selected and meetings have already begun. The anticipated completion of the UAC chartered tasks should be in March 2011. Official changes will be posted to the CCIS Web site.

Update on Medals
The Institute of Heraldry of the Army (IOH) has completed the military specifications (milspecs) for the Global Health Campaign Medal and Global Health Initiatives Service Medal. After final samples are cleared, the medals should be available from the Navy Exchange (NEX) within next 3-5 months. Since there are only two companies producing PHS medals, ribbons, and other accoutrements, the 3-5 months will allow ample time to acquire the necessary hubs and dies to complete the medallion portion of each medal. Images of the final products will be forthcoming when the final standard samples are received from IOH. Additionally, the milspecs for the full size and miniature cap devices, the PHS ceremonial belt buckle (for wear with the sword), the Secretary of Health and Human Services Identification Badge, and the Corps Device Collar Insignia have also been completed. These also should be available for purchase on a large scale in 3-5 months.
Questions and Answers
Q: I have a question about females wearing the male khaki uniform pants. I have looked everywhere trying to find where it is written that a female cannot wear the men’s khaki pants. I have been asked this question and have seen females wearing them. So, my question is, “Can females wear the men’s khaki uniform pants?”

A: Female officers are not authorized to wear male shirts/trousers. Male shirts have buttons on the right while female shirts have buttons on the left. Same with the belt -- as the male inserts the belt into the buckle from the right, and the female from the left. Male trousers have rear pockets, which are not an authorized item on the female trousers, per milspecs. Mixing of male/female uniform specific components is prohibited.
