December 1 is World AIDS Day

The World Health Organization established World AIDS (Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome) Day in 1988. In the United States, there are more than 1 million people living with AIDS and about a quarter of them are unaware of their human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Testing is the only method to determine if there is an infection.

Some of the major risk factors and barriers to prevention are sexual risk factors, substance abuse, socioeconomic status, and HIV testing access.

It is important to get tested to determine if you are infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus); a virus that attacks the immune system, the body’s natural defense system.

What to do? Be safe. Talk about it. Talk to your doctor. Spread the word.
