Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service

Dental Professional Advisory Committee

Dental Mentor Protégé Volunteer

Protégé Qualities:

A Protégé should be a commissioned officer in the grade of O-3, O-4 or a newly promoted O-5 with less than eight years of Commissioned Corps service. Protégés will be selected from a pool of volunteers, with special attention paid to newly commissioned officers. An eagerness to learn, considering the Mentor's suggestions with an open mind is essential. As important will be the ability to perform the primary job functions without allowing the Mentoring experience to distract from that job.

Selection of Protégés:

  • Protégés must volunteer for and commit to the program with an understanding of the purpose, scope and goals of the Mentoring Program.
  • Protégés may be identified by more experienced officers within a program and approached to participate because of the personal advantages and program benefits available.
  • All dental officers coming on active duty should be notified of the program, and the opportunities that it will afford.
  • Protégés should inform supervisors of their participation in the mentoring program.
  • Protégés seeking career opportunities in other PHS agencies should request to be matched to a mentor in the program of interest.
