The purpose of the listserv is to provide a mechanism for Scientist Officers to receive and share information relevant to the USPHS Commissioned Corps Scientist Category. SciPAC Listserv Rules and Guidelines

The following information describes the rules and guidelines pertaining to the point of contact, content, and use of the Scientist Category listserv and will help ensure timeliness, efficiency, and consistency of postings.

Moderator and Point of Contact

The elected SciPAC Secretary will serve as the moderator and the point of contact for the Scientist listserv. As the moderator, the SciPAC Secretary will be responsible for reviewing and approving requests from Scientist officers to post a message to the Scientist listserv. As the point of contact, the SciPAC Secretary will be available to answer inquiries related to the Scientist listserv. If the Secretary is unavailable, the listserv request will be sent directly to the SciPAC Chair for approval and posting. The Vice Chair will be asked to serve as the moderator when the Secretary and Chair are both unavailable. The SciPAC Chief Professional Officer (CPO), Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Category Day Subcommittee Chair are authorized to post messages directly to the listserv. The Category Day Subcommittee Chair is authorized to directly post messages related only to Category Day.

Content

Messages sent to the listserv should pertain to Scientist Officers specifically or to the USPHS more broadly. Please do not send messages that are not consistent with SciPAC’s mission to support Scientist Officers.

Each message sent to the listserv should include:

  1. A few sentences about how the information is relevant to Scientist Officers (if not readily apparent by the message).
  2. Your name and contact information so that listserv members who have questions know who to contact.

Instructions for specific types of messages:

  • Commercial use of the listserv is prohibited. The list may not be used for solicitation purposes or advertising.
  • Notice of conferences, training, and webinars must be approved by the moderator prior to posting.
  • Job announcements should be forwarded to the Chair of the Career Development Subcommittee.

The Career Development Subcommittee Chair will compile job announcements and forward them to the listserv in batches on a weekly basis, if applicable.

Use the Subject Line

Make the subject line descriptive so that recipients can obtain the purpose of the message from glancing at the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.

Think About your Audience

Only send a message to the Scientist Category listserv when it contains information that most Scientist Officers might find beneficial. Your posting will be distributed to many busy people. Please consider whether your post will be of value to others, or whether it is best to send it privately to a smaller group of officers.

Misuse

The SciPAC reserves the right to terminate, at its discretion and without prior notice, the listserv access of any user for failure to abide by these rules and guidelines, or for any other reason.

Listserv Owner

The listserv owner controls list management settings (e.g., sets moderator and direct-posting privileges). Requests for changes in list management should be sent to the SciPAC Secretary, who will communicate them to the Listserv owner.
