RADM Travis Watts, a member of the Choctaw Nation, is the Area Director of the Oklahoma City Area Indian Health Service (IHS). The IHS, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is the principal federal health care advocate and provider of health care services for American Indians and Alaska Natives.
As the Oklahoma City Area Director, RADM Watts is responsible for the provision of comprehensive healthcare services to one of the largest and most diverse service populations in IHS. The Oklahoma City Area serves over 400,000 patients annually and is home to 43 Tribal Nations in the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. The Oklahoma City Area Indian health system provides direct, preventive, and contract health care services through a successful collaboration of over 60 tribal, urban, and federally operated facilities.
RADM Watts previously served as Acting Director of Field Operations for the Oklahoma City Area, where he oversaw the Area’s 11 federally managed facilities and provided management oversight and expertise in formulating policies, goals, and strategies related to Federal program operations and resource allocation. As a clinician and administrator, he has had direct impact by ensuring that comprehensive personal and public health services are available, accessible and result in healthy communities through strong partnerships and the development of a dedicated, competent, and caring workforce.
RADM Watts began his career as a Commissioned Corps Officer in 1989 as a Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training Extern at the Clinton Indian Hospital. From 1990 to 2010, RADM Watts served in various management, operations, and clinical positions in the IHS. In 2010 he was selected as the SE Regional Commissioned Corps Liaison, providing service to over 300 officers assigned to the Oklahoma City, Nashville, and Albuquerque Areas. He holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a doctorate in clinical pharmacy from the University of Oklahoma. He completed an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists accredited residency in primary care through the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. RADM Watts was the first Oklahoma City Area Indian Health Systems pharmacist certified in pharmacotherapy by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties and has practiced as a national clinical pharmacy specialist in the areas of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and anticoagulation.
During his career, RADM Watts has served as a branch President of the Commissioned Officer Association, Chairman and Coordinator of multiple Commissioned Officer Awards Committees, led Agency billet transformation efforts, Co-Chairman of the Oklahoma City Area Institutional Review Board and served on the Agency’s National Pharmacy Council. RADM Watts provided leadership and was on the original Agency teams that developed and initiated what is today’s National Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, IHS Pharmacy Residency Programs, and the National Clinical Pharmacy Specialist Program. RADM Watts initiated one of the Indian Health Service’s first National Pharmacy-Based Anticoagulation Training Programs which has trained hundreds of health care professionals in a health science discipline in which pharmacists provided patient care that optimized medication therapy to ensure optimal outcomes occur in the area of anticoagulation. RADM Watts pioneered partnerships between the University of Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University developing enhanced clinical rotation sites for pharmacy students within the Agency bridging the gap between academia and clinical pharmacy. RADM Watts is the recipient of several honors and awards including the RADM Allen J. Brands Clinical Pharmacist of the Year USPHS Honor Award, American Society of Health Systems Pharmacist – Award of Excellence, several National and Oklahoma City Area I.H.S. Director Awards, the Public Health Service Meritorious Service Medal and the USPHS Outstanding Service, Medal.
RADM Watts has more than 29 years of experience in clinical pharmacy, hospital and clinic operations, Commissioned Corps personnel services, and health care administration. RADM Watts has been married to his wife Sheila for over 30 years and together they have two children Blake and Kate.
