Our Coin
[HOAC Coin]
[HOAC 25th Anniversary Coin - Honoring Surgeon Generals VADM Novello and VADM Carmona]
The HOAC coins symbolize the participation, accomplishments and the goals of the Hispanic Officers Advisory Committee. Uniform Services Unit Coins are traditional instruments of meritorious recognition and corps camaraderie throughout the decades.
The building in the center of the HOAC emblem represents the cupola of the churches found in all the Latin American countries. This building, often a church, is found in La Plaza Central, or Central Square of most cities. We do not attach a religious meaning to our emblem. We wish to represent the heart of activity in so many cities and small towns throughout Latin America.
The globe to the left of center represents the pursuit of global health shared by the United States Public Health Service and HOAC, and shows Latin America at the forefront of the globe. The patterned borders to the left and right emulate architecture of the Mayan people, found throughout Meso-America. Mayan civilization was perhaps the most scientifically advanced of all pre-European civilizations in the American continent. At the base of the emblem our slogan reads "Nuestro Futuro es Nuestra Salud" which translated means: "Our Future is Our Health".
