INFORMATION ABOUT FCC LOMPOC, CA

The city of Lompoc is located on the central coast of California, 50 miles north of Santa Barbara and 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Lompoc is adjacent to Vandenberg Air Force Base. The first settlers in the Lompoc Valley were the Chumash Indians. The Chumash and their predecessors lived in this region for many years prior to European influence. Lompoc is a Chumash word meaning little lake or lagoon - pronounced LOM-POKE. Chumash sites, and more recent history, are captured in the Lompoc Museum in downtown Lompoc. Early Lompoc was essentially agricultural, but the community economic and labor base grew and diversified, due in part to the establishment and growth of Camp Cooke Army Base (now Vandenberg Air Force Base.)

Climate

The weather in Lompoc averages a high of 69.8 degrees and a low of 46.9 degrees. The annual precipitation rate is 14.82. Most days begin with low clouds and fog with the fog clearing in the early morning. By late afternoon, the fog often returns. Light jackets and sweaters are recommended. The mild, sunny climate and rich soil provide ideal conditions for growing flowers to harvest their seeds. From June through September, the city is bordered by acres of vivid zinnias, marigolds, sweet peas, petunias and other blossoms.
