Purpose: NOAA, under the auspices of the Department of Commerce, is one of the seven uniformed services, and is responsible for conducting research and gathering data about the global oceans, atmosphere, and space. NOAA predicts changes in the earth's environment, forecasts weather patterns, and warns of dangerous weather; charts the seas and skies; and guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources. Commissioned Corps officers provide health care services to NOAA commissioned officers, NOAA Wage Marine personnel, and certain retirees and their dependents.
