APFT Overview

An Annual Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is one of the 7 requirements needed to achieve and maintain a basic level of readiness. The physical fitness requirement must be done and submitted every 12 months and BEFORE the expiration of the previous APFT. Officers should plan accordingly to ensure a valid APFT is performed and submitted to the Officer Secure Area prior to the expiration. Although this page does not go through each exercise and requirement, we do provide you with the URL to find the current APFT exercises and standards. Additionally, you will find the necessary steps for updating your APFT results in the Officer Secure Area – which is mandatory to successfully meet the physical fitness requirement.

APFT Waivers

Officers who are unable to do a category of exercises (cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, etc.) due to a medical limitation may request a medical waiver. The remainder of the APFT not covered by a medical waiver must be completed and submitted. For more information on APFT Waivers visit: https://dcp.psc.gov/ccmis/Medical%20Affairs/MA_medical_waiver_program.aspx.

Completing the APFT Requirement

Once you have completed your APFT exercises, you must update your Officer Secure Area profile with the results for each required exercise. Below, you will find step-by-step instructions on how to update your eOPF, for additional guidance, please visit RDB APFT frequently asked questions.

APFT Form PHS-7044  must be uploaded in eDOC-U and APFT scores updated in the Officer Secure Area.  Keep the APFT Form for your records.

Uploading APFT in the eDOC-U system in the CCMIS OSA.

Step 1.

Using your HSPD-12 Access Card, login to the Officer Secure Area (https://dcp.psc.gov/osa/osa_security_statement.aspx )

Step 2.

Select the Readiness category in eDOC-U and document name “APFT.”  During the upload process, you will be linked to the APFT tab in the RDB Self-Service Area to enter your data prior to uploading the document.

Detailed instructions are provided in the eDOC-U User Guide.  The guide is available by selecting the “eDOC-U User Guide” link in the top right corner while in the eDOC-U application.

Retention Weight Standards

All officers need to review the new Retention Weight Standards.  Officers must submit height and weight information, including BMI and measurements needed to calculate EPBF, if applicable, annually with submission of their PHU or as otherwise required by the ASH or OSG.

The PHU and, if required, the Verified Weight Report (Form PHS-7044-1), will provide and determine the annual baseline weight. Officers will continue to report an annual weight with the submission of the Annual Physical Fitness Test (APFT). Only officers with a BMI of 27.6 kg/m2 or greater must obtain and include their EPBF or “taping” results on the Verified Weight Report.

The PHU and Verified Weight Report (PHS-7044-1) must be completed and signed by the medical provider or healthcare professional at the time of completion of that document and include the provider’s credentials.

KEY POINTS:

  • The Verified Weight Report form is to be verified by a healthcare provider, or any person who is authorized to verify the Annual Physical Fitness Test (APFT).
  • The Verified Weight Report must be submitted even if an officer has any type of waiver or believes has a medical reason for his/her current weight.
  • The electronic form will automatically calculate BMI and estimate body fat percentage.
  • To upload the form, select the “Readiness” category in eDOC-U. The document cannot be viewed in electronic Official Personnel Folder (eOPF). The information will display in the RDB Self-Service within one business day. It is the officer’s responsibility to login into RDB Self-Service and ensure the information is available and correct.
  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for new Retention Weight Standards can be found at https://dcp.psc.gov/ccmis/WeightStandardsFAQ_m.aspx .
  • A waiver can be requested from Medical Affairs if an officer believes a medical condition or treatment impacts his/her ability to comply with Retention Weight Standards. Officers who are not in compliance with the new Retention Weight Standards and do not have a waiver must meet individualized targeted weight loss goals and report progress quarterly.
  • You must complete Section II: Body Mass Index (BMI), on the APFT (PHS-7044)
    • If not within Retention Weight Standards’ BMI range, you must also submit a Verified Weight Report ( PHS-7044-1) to provide the required taping measurements as documented in POM 821.65.  Submit the 7044-1 in eDOC-U as a “Verified Weight Report” document.  Do not submit the 7044-1 as an “APFT” document.
  • You must submit the APFT (PHS-7044) through eDOC-U in the CCMIS OSA.
    • Select the Readiness category in eDOC-U and document name “APFT.”  During the upload process, you will be linked to the APFT tab in the RDB Self-Service Area to enter your data prior to uploading the document.
    • Detailed instructions are provided in the eDOC-U User Guide.  The guide is available by selecting the “eDOC-U User Guide” link in the top right corner while in the eDOC-U application.

As with any weight loss plan, it is always good to contact a healthcare provider for support, guidance, and to ensure that the weight loss plan is safe. We are committed to helping each officer meet the Retention Weight Standards.

Weight Management Program developed by a group of USPHS Commissioned Corps Registered Dietitian Nutritionists is available online and consists of 6 educational sessions, with goals, to help officers stay on track.  This program was designed for Corps officers and members of the public seeking general information and guidance on achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight.

CCHQ will continue to provide updates via email and on the Weight Standards webpage . For immediate concerns or questions regarding Retention Weight Standards, please email: WeightStandards@hhs.gov .
