Approximately 700 people have already registered for the 49th annual USPHS Scientific and Training Symposium. Held on June 10-12 at the Raleigh Convention Center, the conference will bring together PHS officers and local and state health professionals from throughout North Carolina. The PHS Commissioned Officers Foundation is partnering with the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health to host the conference. The theme for this year's conference is "Public Health Today: Prevention, Innovation, Progress."

Continuing education will be available for all PHS categories.

The USPHS Symposium will feature pre-conference courses on Basic Life Support, COA Branch Leadership, Food Safety for EHOs, Leadership Training, Nurse Skills Training, and Living Life on Purpose: Investing in Your Own Health. There will be over 50 scientific track sessions, a full day of category-specific content, a free retirement seminar, the Surgeon General’s 5K Run/Walk and APFT, and the Anchor & Caduceus Dinner.

Speakers will include:
  • Dr. Howard Koh, Assistant Secretary for Health (invited)
  • Dr. Richard Carmona, 17th Surgeon General of the United States
  • RADM Boris Lushniak, USPHS, Acting Surgeon General
  • RADM Fitzhugh Mullan, USPHS (Ret), Professor of Pediatrics, George Washington University, will deliver the C. Everett Koop Memorial Lecture
  • Dr. Arthur Kellerman, Dean, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services, University of the Health Science, will deliver the Luther Terry Lecture; and
  • Dr. William Lanier, Mayo Clinic, will discuss the value and process of publishing scientific updates
