Dear Officers:

We are pleased to report that Commissioned Corps officers are now authorized to transfer unused Post 9/11 GI Bill education benefits to eligible family members, as provided in The Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act of 2010.

The Department of Defense has determined that it is appropriate for the USPHS Commissioned Corps to participate in this benefit, and the Office of the Surgeon General will now move forward with necessary regulations and operational procedures to administer transferability effective August 1, 2011. We will share further details as they are available.

We’re making great strides in many areas and appreciate your feedback and dedication to strengthening and improving the Corps.

We are proud to serve as your leaders and thank you for your ongoing commitment to public health.

Sincerely,
  • Howard K Koh, MD, MPH
  • Regina M Benjamin, MD, MBA
  • Assistant Secretary for Health
  • VADM, USPHS
  • Surgeon General
