Public Health Service officers are trained and equipped to provide crucial public health leadership, assist with policy development, advance innovation and science, provide essential care services and respond to national and global public health emergencies. Through our Active Duty Regular Corps, our Public Health Response Strike Team (PHERST) and our Ready Reserve Corps, we remain responsive and available to rapidly deploy in the service of health.

Frequently Asked Questions
The JTR implements policy and laws establishing travel and transportation allowances. It applies to the seven uniformed services (i.e., Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps, and Public Health Service Commissioned Corps).
Official travel is travel authorized solely for Government business and does not include travel for personal reasons, by a circuitous route, or by transportation modes not authorized or approved. Official travel must be accompanied by a written or verbal order. When a written order is not possible, a verbal order can be issued by an appropriate approving official.
No. Public Health Service officers will be reimbursed for authorized or approved transportation, commercial lodging costs, and all other expenses (in accordance with the JTR) as stated in an official travel order.
The Secretarial Process for all Travel and Transportation states that requests must be submitted to Agency Liaison/Budget Officer for recommendation (concurrence or non-concurrence) prior to submission to the Travel Coordinator, CCHQ for final adjudication. The items that may be approved through the Secretarial Process, include but are not limited to, the following:
- Non temporary storage (NTS) of household goods;
- Storage in transit (SIT); and
- Extension of travel and transportation allowances;
All travel requests must be endorsed/recommended by each agency Liaison/Agency Budget Officer and forwarded to Commissioned Corps Headquarters (CCHQ), Attention: Travel Coordinator. When can I submit a travel request for approval through the Secretarial Process?
Public Health Service officers will be reimbursed for authorized or approved transportation and commercial lodging costs in accordance with the JTR. However, all Public Health Service officers with a travel order authorization must submit a travel claim within five business working days. Can a Public Health Service officer be paid for travel if he/she does not submit a travel claim?
