- Seniority Credit is the total amount of time an officer has served in his/her current permanent grade.
- Example: An officer must serve 5 years as an O-4 to meet the seniority credit date requirement for O-5.
- An officer who has a break in their service will have their seniority credit restarted on their next appointment.
- Active-Duty Service is the total amount of time an officer has served in the USPHS Commissioned Corps or in another uniformed service.
- Example: An officer must serve 11 years in the USPHS Commissioned Corps (or 3 years in USPHS and 8 years in another uniformed service) to meet the active-duty service requirement for O-5.
- Time as an enlisted service member does not count towards active-duty service time.

- Active-Duty Service is the total amount of time an officer has served in the Selected Ready Reserve and Active Individual Ready Reserve.
- Active Status does not include members while placed on the Temporary Disability Retired List, an inactive status list, in the inactive Army National Guard or inactive Air National Guard, or in a retired status.
- Time as an enlisted service member does not count towards active status service time.
