Zones
Overview
Zones are groupings of officers in the same grade and promotion category groups who are eligible for promotion and the Surgeon General designates for examination. All officers will fall into one of the four groupings:
- Below the Zone (BTZ)
- In the Zone (ITZ)
- Above the Zone (ATZ)
- Special Promotion Examination (SPE)
Zones
- BTZ refers to a group of officers designated for promotion examination prior to meeting the In the Zone (ITZ) promotion eligibility criteria. This is a form of early promotion and is very similar to Exceptional Proficiency Promotion (EPP) from previous years. Officers must be nominated by their agency for BTZ.
- ITZ refers to a group of officers designated for promotion who meet the promotion eligibility criteria and who have not had two failures of promotion. This is your “standard” promotion attempt.
- ATZ refers to a group of officers who were not promoted after In the Zone (ITZ) promotion attempt(s). This is your final “standard” promotion attempt.
- SPE is the final promotion examination available when an officer has not been promoted after an Above the Zone (ATZ) attempt. Officers are not automatically reviewed for SPE after an ATZ attempt. An officer’s agency must nominate them for SPE. If you were reviewed for Below the Zone, you are not eligible for SPE.
