PHS Wellness Champions Program
The PHS Wellness Champions Program Overview:
The PHS Wellness Champions Program was created and designed to:
- Provide a proactive approach to addressing the emotional, physical, and nutritional well-being of PHS officers
- An initiative aimed at enhancing the overall health and wellness of our esteemed PHS officers
- Tailored to meet the unique needs of PHS Officers according to their duty station/agency.
Mission:
To promote strategies that strengthen resilience among U.S. Public Health Service Officers by advancing a proactive approach to emotional, physical, and nutritional well-being, and by delivering accessible, relevant wellness information through multiple communication platforms.
Vision:
To cultivate a culture of wellness across the U.S. Public Health Service where officers are informed, supported, and empowered to prioritize their health, sustain resilience, and maintain operational readiness throughout their careers.
Wellness Categories:
- Stress Management - The ability to recognize, mitigate, and effectively respond to stressors in order to sustain operational performance and resilience.
- Sleep Management - The consistent practice of obtaining restorative sleep to maintain cognitive function, physical readiness, and mission effectiveness.
- Physical Wellness - The maintenance of physical fitness and health to ensure readiness for deployment and sustained operational demands.
- Emotional Wellness - The capacity to manage emotions, maintain psychological resilience, and function effectively in high-demand environments.
- Nutritional Wellness - The consumption of balanced nutrition to support energy, endurance, recovery, and overall mission readiness.
- Spiritual Wellness - The development of purpose, values, and inner resilience that support decision-making, coping, and sustained service.
- Financial Wellness - The effective management of personal finances to reduce stress and maintain stability that supports mission focus and readiness.
How the Program Works:
- Wellness Champions are assigned to each agency and are wellness champion advocates for their agency
- PHS Officers will contact their agency's Wellness Champion for guidance on wellness issues
- Wellness Champions will educate PHS Officers on Wellness topics via quarterly newsletters
- Wellness Champions assist with planning, coordination, and wellness activities, including presentations and events.
***Wellness Champions do not provide mental health therapy, but can redirect officers to PHS Corps Care for additional support***
About Wellness Champions:
Wellness Champions work for the agencies they represent and serve as the point of contact for their agency on wellness questions and/or concerns. Each Wellness Champion is assigned as an expert for a wellness category. If Wellness Champions have questions (and do not know the answers) about wellness topics outside their category, they can contact Wellness Champions from the relevant category to get answers to their questions/concerns. Agency Wellness Champions will contact the officer in question with their response. This will eliminate confusion of PHS Officers contacting Wellness Champions from other agencies. Wellness Champions must receive approval from the PHS Wellness Program Manager before engaging in activities on behalf of the PHS Wellness Program.
