19th Surgeon General Ceremonially Sworn-In by Vice President Joseph Biden
Contributed by: Tania Allinger
VADM Vivek H. Murthy was ceremonially sworn-in by Vice President Joseph Biden as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 in Fort Myer, Virginia.
VADM Murthy’s family was on hand for the ceremony and, along with Vice President Biden, had the proud moment of putting the official rank of Surgeon General on VADM Murthy’s shoulders. A moment made more significant by the Surgeon General’s own account that he could have been a farmer in rural India if not for his “…grandfather’s insistence that his son get an education.”
“I am struck by a simple truth: by any reasonable measure, I shouldn’t be standing here.” VADM Murthy stated.
And by any reasonable measure, the Murthy family could have moved to a country other than America. However, as VADM Murthy recounts, “They knew that here, more than any other place in the world, they would not be limited because of who they were or where they came from.”
From his humble beginnings the Surgeon General acknowledges, “… it took family and friends, teachers and coaches, employers and advocates, community leaders and elected officials to get us to this place.” Demonstrating how acting as a community has great impact.
Community is a key word of the Surgeon General’s vision for healthcare in America. VADM Murthy said, “If we are to truly be a stronger and healthier country, we must bring together all parts of our society to build the great American community.” As he pointed out that health is a ‘shared responsibility’ he added, “It’s a place where each and every one of us asks, ‘What can I do to improve the health and well-being of our country?’ The answer can come from anywhere but the actions must come from everywhere.”
It is clear VADM Murthy will look towards his Commissioned Corps officers to champion his vision of a stronger and healthier great American community. He promised to ‘respect the uniform and legacy of the Public Health Service.’ He also thanked the 6,700 men and women of the Corps and added, “You are a credit to our nation, and I am privileged to lead you.”
