The USPHS Commissioned Corps is committed to our mission to protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of the nation. Public Health Service officers are trained and equipped to provide crucial public health leadership, assist with policy development, advance innovation and science, provide essential care services and respond to national and global public health emergencies. Through our Active Duty Regular Corps, our Public Health Response Strike Team (PHERST) and our Ready Reserve Corps, we remain responsive and available to rapidly deploy in the service of health.

Happy Birthday Commissioned Corps!
Dear Fellow Commissioned Corps Officers,
Today, January 4th, marks 129 years since Congress passed a bill to create the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. In response to a shortage of health care professionals in the Marine Hospital Service, the law established a mobile corps subject to duty anywhere upon assignment, a policy that had been in effect since Dr. John Maynard Woodworth, the first Supervising Surgeon (Surgeon General) assumed leadership of the Service in 1871.
Throughout our long and proud history, many notable public health achievements occurred that have decreased mortality and morbidity in the areas of vaccination, fluoridation of drinking water, and control of infectious diseases.
Today our officers continue a shared commitment to respond to national and international public health needs. Last year, our officers were called to serve on the front lines in the aftermath of the tragic shootings in Las Vegas, the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. We called more than 1,900 officers to respond to these aftermaths and our work still continues today in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
This is an exciting time for the Commissioned Corps. As we continue to reimagine the Commissioned Corps, our continued state of readiness is demonstrated through our compliance with conditions of service; more specifically by observing our height and weight standards and maintaining clinical competencies. Every day we should all work to strengthen our Service in order to demonstrate our value, and respond to the every-changing public health landscape of the world.
In the coming weeks, you will receive details about my first Commissioned Corps All-Hands Meeting. At this meeting, I will share my vision and three priorities with you (opioids, health and national security, and health and the economy). This is also an opportunity to hear directly from you and answer some of your questions. We will also provide an overview and update of the newly implemented Blended Retirement System (BRS) and Health Professions Special Pays.
I am so honored to serve alongside of each of you. It has been a lifelong dream to serve with individuals who are committed to serving others. Thank you for your service and commitment.
